Co-writer of such classic Country, Soul and Pop classics such as "Do Right Woman," "Cry Like a Baby," "I'm Your Puppet," "Out of Left Field," and "Dark End of The Street," Dan Penn spends his time these days retrieving, dusting off, and occasionally releasing lost gems from his many songwriting sessions. Having made only a handful of albums over the course of his long career, his demo session recordings have become legendary primarily because of the versatility and range of his voice, and it's ability to sell a song. They have long been sought after by enthusiasts and collectors, and more and more of these tracks have seen the light of day over the past decade. This new compilation, curated by Penn himself, begins with the title track, "Smoke Filled Room," an unheard signature classic which could have been written in the heyday of Memphis and Muscle Shoals, before it runs the table from straight up southern gospel to blues and power ballads.
