The year is 1937. As the play opens, THE LECTURER, an authority figure, informs the audience of the new drug menace “Marihuana” which threatens the American way of life with “REEFER MADNESS.” The Lecturer explains that this traveling troupe of actors operates under the auspices of the WPA Federal Theatre Project and is under the careful supervision of Harry J. Anslinger, head of the newly-formed Federal Bureau of Narcotics. The Lecturer is here to present a dramatic reenactment of an actual case from Mr. Anslinger’s files, a true story which happened in a town very much like this one.
The cast features Anthony Norman as Jimmy Harper, Darcy Rose Byrnes (Big Shot, Sofia the First) as Mary Lane, J. Elaine Marcos (Annie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert ) as Sally De Bain, Nicole Parker (Mad TV, Wicked) as Mae Coleman, Thomas Dekker (Swimming with Sharks, A Nightmare on Elm Street ) as Ralph Wiley, and Bryan Daniel Porter (Dog Man, Sand Land) as The Lecturer/Jack/Jesus. The ensemble includes Andre Aultman, Claire Crause, Muteti, and Alex Tho. Swings David T. Crane and Natalie Holt MacDonald round out the company.
The campy musical features a book and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and music by Dan Studney, The album is produced by Michael Croiter, Murphy, and Studney. Production music director David Lamoureaux serves as co-producer.
