Dwight Yoakam occupies a singular position in contemporary country. No artist has better balanced mainstream commercial success with artistic, alt-country credibility, while somehow managing to embody both the music’s most traditional and its most progressive impulses. Best known for being Anderson.Paak's live band The Free Nationals have toured the world meeting countless artists who inspire them. While the amount of all the contemporary musicians who inspire them would take an anthology of box sets, they boiled it down to a handful to include on the album, all of whom lend their talents in spreading the funk. Free Nationals means The first people of America, Indigenous to the land before Columbus came. Staying Indigenous to the funk, The Free Nationals wanted to tribute their inspirations such as Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Herbie Hancock, and Al Green by incorporating musicianship while pioneering musical euphoria for a new generation.

I've been in the game a long time, but I've always considered myself a student, says G. Love. Finishing this album with Keb Mo' felt like graduation. Recorded in Nashville with a slew of special guests including Robert Randolph, Marcus King, and Roosevelt Collier, The Juice' is indeed diploma-worthy. Co-produced and co-written with GRAMMY-winning icon Keb Mo', it's an electrifying collection, one that tips its cap to more than a century of blues greats even as it offers its own distinctly modern pop spin on the genre and solidifies his place in music history as a genre-bending pioneer with a sound The New York Times described as a new and urgent hybrid and NPR called a musical melting pot. G. Love's lyrics are both personal and political here, artfully balancing his appreciation for the simple joys in life with his obligation to speak out for justice and equality, and his performances are suitably riotous and rousing to match, with infectious call-and-response hooks and funky sing-along choruses at every turn. Easy as it is to succumb to cynicism these days, the songs on 'The Juice' refuse, insisting instead on hope and determination in the face of doubt and despair. I've never been the kind of guy who thinks he's going to change the world with his guitar, reflects G. Love. But maybe I can write the kind of songs that give strength and encouragement to the people who are out there doing the work to make this planet a better place. Those are the people I want to lift up with my music.
The next installment of the Domino Documents series features Dirty Projectors at the height of their touring powers. Raw Youth Collage is the sophomore project from British artist Mura Masa. It is intended to be a conceptual album focusing on the need for / dependency on nostalgia and regression in the wake of the often helpless feeling amongst today's youth culture; there is a general melancholia surrounding a past excitement and innocence that is longing to be recaptured, but may never have existed. Musically, these ideas will be explored through influences familiar to Alex from his childhood.

Deluxe double vinyl LP pressing including bonus tracks. 2019 release. The great Bill Fay returns with the third album in the celebrated second phase of his recording career. "21 years ago, Colin Miles of See For Miles records dropped a pebble in a pond." says Fay. It was Miles who, on a gut instinct, reissued Bill Fay's albums for Deram - records made in 1970 and 1971 and deleted shortly afterwards - which Miles had always admired. Rave reviews and endorsements from the likes of Jim O'Rourke (Tortoise) and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) led to a huge revival of interest in this vanished artist. Fay, now 76, was not actually a hermit but a quiet, private person who had withdrawn from a music world changed to the point where he felt no longer involved. But he had continued to make music almost every day in the intervening decades. "Colin said to me, 'You wanna get out there, Bill'," Fay says, chuckling at the memory. "I replied, 'I'm a corner-of-the-room person, Colin'."
Cursive are releasing their 8th album on CD and LP. The band has been out on the road with Against Me! and Cloud Nothings this fall.
Melding the analogue '60s with modern sounds, Hollow Ship's unique brand of psychedelic rock has already seen them tour far beyond the borders of Sweden, despite not releasing a single minute of music until now. Sons of Apollo return with their sophomore album ‘MMXX’, the follow-up to their acclaimed 2017 debut ‘Psychotic Symphony’, as well as their epic 2019 live album ‘Live with the Plovdiv Psychotic Symphony’. With ‘MMXX’, Mike Portnoy (drums), Derek Sherinian (keyboards), Jeff Scott Soto (vocals), Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal and Billy Sheehan (bass) are ready to take everything to a new level. “Stylistically, we have followed the same path as the debut,” outlines Portnoy. “But we feel that it has come out stronger, simply because we know one another better. 'Psychotic Symphony' was the first time the five of us had worked together, so there was bound to be an air of experimentation happening. Now, we can draw on having the experience not only of recording that album, but also of touring together a lot. And now there is clearly a lot more obvious chemistry going on.” “Each member of this band has their own signature sound on their instrument,” adds Sherinian. “And when you put all of this together what you get is a wonderful five-headed beast. It makes this a sonically special band, which is definitely what comes across on 'MMXX'.
